Dr Toby Ashken

Dr Toby Ashken is a consultant anaesthetist at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), an Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow at University College London (UCL) and a Board Member of Regional Anaesthesia UK. His NHS practice includes anaesthesia for adults and children, and he has particular interests in anaesthesia for Orthopaedic, ENT, and Bariatric surgeries.

Toby holds degrees from the University of Oxford and King’s College London and undertook anaesthetic training in London. He was fortunate to train in various tertiary centres, including Imperial, The Royal London and UCLH. He undertook prestigious fellowships in in regional anaesthesia at UCLH and ENT anaesthesia at The Royal National ENT Hospital. 

Toby publishes regularly in the anaesthetic literature and holds a keen interest in education. For the past three years, he has organised a national conference with more than 700 delegates each year and has taught and lectured at regional, national, and international meetings.

Having undergone several surgical procedures as a patient, he has a full understanding of the natural anxieties around surgery and anaesthesia and is always happy to discuss these issues with patients.

Away from work, he enjoys swimming, skiing and reading. Toby is also trying to improve his Spanish language skills and piano playing – both are very much works in progress.
