Full Shoulder Examination – Featured Video of the Week
In this week’s featured video from my YouTube Channel, we look at how to conduct a full Shoulder Examination.
In order to diagnose any shoulder injury, it is important that your surgeon conducts a full in-depth study of the entire affected area in order to determine the full extent of the injury and the most effective form of treatment.
This process starts with inspection, both from the front and the back, looking at the contours of the shoulder. This is followed by palpation, in which the surgeon will determine areas of maximum tenderness.
Finally, the patient will be directed through a range of movement exercises. Throughout this process, the surgeon will assess the patient from both the front and back and compare both sides of the body.
This includes internal and external rotation and elevation in both flexion and abduction (lifting the arm forward and out to the side).
Finally, stress testing of the individual muscles and tendons is performed, as well as a range of specific tests designed to look for particular disorders.
This examination combined with additional tests such as X-rays, ultrasound scans and/or an MRI scan to help the surgeon to decide on the appropriate course of action.
