Smart tools for knee surgery
Our Capital Orthopaedics surgeons are using pioneering tools for meniscal repair to improve accuracy and efficiency
As a leading arthroscopic surgeon, Simon Moyes is always keeping up with the latest technological advances that make keyhole surgery more efficient and less invasive. With his intent to always provide the best service with a minimal recovery time, using new tools such as Arthrex’s meniscal repair systems helps Simon to complete the surgery even more effectively and smoothly.
Arthrex has developed two tools that help with the repair of cartilage tears behind the kneecap. While the Meniscal Cinch II and the ZoneNavigator are simple to operate and simple in concept, they represent a step forward in this type of surgery. Combining the principles of a needle threader and a stapler, the tools allow the surgeon to implant tiny ‘staples’ and lace the sutures (stitches) through the tear – all one-handed, while guiding the arthroscopic camera with the other hand. The two tools have been developed for two different types of meniscal repairs – entirely internal repairs and those which require a more complex ‘inside-out’ repair.
The level of accuracy using these finely calibrated, trigger-action devices is exceptional, and are very much at the cutting edge of arthroscopic surgery today. Simon is pleased to espouse new technology in order to provide the best possible care for his patients, and to ensure that he remains at the forefront of the field.
